Jewish mystics do not see these mysteries as “coincidences” but see a mysterious code written throughout the Torah. Many times this code is seen in words or names of God reversed, vertical or diagonally across the page. Equidistant Letter Sequence or ELS is just one way to find the hidden code in the ancient text of the Torah, very much like a crossword puzzle.

One example is that in the book of Genesis, if you start with the first letter Taw ת and count fifty letters, then fifty more and so on, the Hebrew word for Torah (תּוֹרָה) gets spelled out (Sherman, pg. 28). In Exodus 1:1, starting with the letter Taw ת and counting by fifty as well, the Torah is also spelled out.
